The 2018 M w 7.5 Highlands Earthquake in Papua New Guinea: Implications for Structural Style in an Active Fold and Thrust Belt

چکیده
The Papuan Fold and Thrust Belt (PFTB) in Papua New Guinea is actively forming within a complex tectonic setting at the boundary of obliquely converging Australian Pacific plates. inaccessibility PFTB make it one least well-understood fold thrust belts on Earth. On February 25, 2018, Mw 7.5 earthquake occurred PFTB, triggering an aftershock sequence which included five events ≥Mw 6. In this study, we combine seismological, GPS remote sensing observations to investigate spatiotemporal distribution crustal deformation during these events. All earthquakes 6 were related reverse offset northeast-dipping fault planes out six, including mainshock, associated with midcrustal focal depths (∼15–30 km). During sequence, underwent up 1.2 m uplift ground over 7,500 km2. Combining our geological knowledge convergent margin highlights primary control northern passive structural style. We propose that was inversion hidden extensional system beneath lateral variations along zone had significant influence deformation. It follows has important evolution variable styles PFTB. This study complexity can characterize style belts.

Collapse structures in Dowgonbadan region, Zagros fold- thrust belt
Allochthonous masses are common structures in Zagros fold-thrust belt. They are generally considered as collapse structures formed by the influence of gravity and in rock units with competency contrast. However, large allochthonous masses mapped in Dowgonbadan area in Dezful Embayment near the Mountain Front Fault (MFF) of Zagros show characteristics different from the belt common collapse stru...
متن کاملArthritis in the highlands of Papua New Guinea
Accepted for publication 9 September 1992 Abstract Acute polyarthritis is an important cause of morbidity in many tropical countries. Classification has often been difficult, with the term tropical polyarthritis used for those in whom a diagnosis could not be made. The implication thatthis is a distinct entity isprobablyincorrect, with likely causes being septic arthritis or post-infective reac...
متن کاملChronic lung disease in the Papua New Guinea Highlands.
In the Eastern Highlands of Papua New Guinea 46 men and 24 women with chronic lung disease underwent clinical and lung function investigations. In all cases the sole or predominant abnormality was irreversible airways obstruction, probably from chronic bronchitis with variable amounts of acompanying emphysema. There were close similarities to chronic obstructife lung disease in European populat...
متن کاملIodine deficiency in Papua New Guinea (sub-clinical iodine deficiency and salt iodization in the highlands of Papua New Guinea).
Data on the status about iodine nutrition in children in Papua New Guinea (PNG) are scarce. This study attempts to determine the mean daily per capita consumption of salt, the iodine content of salt in the households and retail shops and the urinary iodine concentration in children (6-12 years) in Hella Region, Southern Highland Province (SHP), PNG. The mean daily consumption of salt was 2.62 +...
متن کاملRelative timing of calcite twinning strain and fold-thrust belt development; Hudson Valley fold-thrust belt, New York, U.S.A
Coarse-grained limestone samples were collected across the Hudson Valley Fold-Thrust Belt with the aim of determining the temporal and spatial relationship between calcite twinning strain and fold-thrust belt development. The majority of the samples have well defined oblate strain ellipsoids with the maximum shortening axes (e3) perpendicular to bedding strike, and e3 magnitudes that range from...
